What is a business app?

An app for your employees and processes

A business app is an application built for internal use — for employees, partners or a specific user group. Unlike a consumer app in the App Store, it supports a concrete business process and is typically distributed within the organisation.

Examples: a field service app for on-site workers, an approval app for managers, a quality inspection app for production staff, or a stakeholder portal for executives.

  • Field service and scheduling: checklists, work orders, route planning and progress tracking for on-site staff.
  • Inspections and quality control: digital forms with photos, signatures and automatic reporting.
  • Approval flows: approve documents, expense claims or requests directly from mobile.
  • Stakeholder and executive apps: up-to-date information and dashboards for decision makers.
  • Internal knowledge bases: manuals, instructions and product information always at hand.

Technology

Why Flutter for business apps?

Most business apps need to run on both iPhones and Android devices, sometimes also on tablets. With Flutter we build a single codebase that works on all devices. That saves considerably on development costs and simplifies maintenance.

Offline functionality

Field workers often operate in locations with poor or no internet. Flutter apps can work fully offline and synchronise once a connection is restored.

Enterprise authentication

We connect the app to your identity management system, for example via Single Sign-On (SSO), Active Directory or Google Workspace. Employees log in with their company account.

System integrations

We integrate the app with your existing systems: ERP, CRM, document management or custom APIs. Call us for an initial estimate: 010 307 6100

Cost of having a business app built

Pricing

What does a business app cost?

The cost depends on the complexity of the processes the app needs to support. A simple business app with a limited number of screens starts from €10,000. A fully-featured app with offline capability, multiple user roles, a backend and system integrations can easily reach €30,000–€80,000 or more.

Factors that determine the price:

  • Screens and processes: more business logic means more development time.
  • Offline functionality: local storage and synchronisation require additional architecture work.
  • Integrations: connecting to ERP, CRM or other systems adds time.
  • User roles: multiple roles with their own permissions and screens increase complexity.

For a detailed breakdown of all pricing factors, see our app development costs guide.

Internal or external

Which type of business app do you need?

Business apps fall broadly into two types, each with their own requirements for design, security and distribution.

Internal apps — for employees

An internal business app is built for your own employees or partners: field workers, production staff, managers or contractors. It supports a concrete work process and is distributed via MDM or enterprise distribution. Examples: field service app, inspection app, digital work orders and logistics planning.

External apps — for customers or partners

An external business app targets customers, members or business relations: an ordering app, a customer portal, a member environment or a stakeholder app for executives. The focus is on accessibility, onboarding and brand experience.

Industries

We build business apps for a wide range of industries: logistics and transport, healthcare, government, finance and manufacturing. See our cases for examples per industry.

Veelgestelde vragen

Veelgestelde vragen over Business app development

What is the difference between a business app and a regular app?

A consumer app is aimed at a broad audience in the App Store or Google Play. A business app is designed for a specific user group within or around an organisation: employees, partners, contractors or executives. The app supports a concrete business process and typically integrates with existing systems.

Distribution also differs: business apps are often distributed via Mobile Device Management (MDM) or enterprise distribution, so they are not publicly visible in the app stores.

Can the business app work offline?

Yes. We build Flutter apps with local data storage that work without an internet connection. The app automatically synchronises once a connection is available. This is particularly valuable for field workers operating in locations with poor coverage, such as warehouses, construction sites or remote areas.

Can the app connect to our ERP or CRM system?

Yes. We have extensive experience connecting apps to business software via APIs. We regularly work with REST and GraphQL APIs. If your system has an API, we can integrate it. If there is no API, we will explore the best alternative approach together.

How long does it take to have a business app built?

A simple business app can go live in 2 to 3 months. A fully-featured app with system integrations, offline functionality and multiple user roles takes 4 to 6 months. The preparation phase — from first conversation to approved quote — typically takes 2 to 4 weeks.

We work in two-week rounds. After each round you receive a working version you can test with real users. That allows you to course-correct and ensures the end result fits the real-world workflow.

Who manages the app after launch?

After launch we handle maintenance: OS updates, dependency upgrades, bug fixes and further development. Each quarter we issue an advisory report with recommended work. You decide what to commission — no fixed contract, no obligation.

Keep in mind that deferring maintenance builds up technical debt. When Apple or Google release new OS versions, an unmaintained app can become unstable or be rejected by the stores.

What is the difference between a B2B and a B2C business app?

A B2B business app targets professional users: employees, partners or buyers at other companies. A B2C app is aimed at consumers. B2B apps focus on system integrations, user roles and process support. B2C apps focus on onboarding, ease of use for a broad audience and marketing integrations.

The Next App primarily builds B2B apps, but also B2C apps for companies looking to reach their customers via mobile — think customer portals, member apps and client-facing field service tools.

Which industries do you build business apps for?

We build business apps for a variety of industries: logistics and transport (scheduling, work orders, track & trace), healthcare (reporting, compliance, client communication), government (reporting apps, intranet, participation tools), finance (dashboards, approval flows) and manufacturing (quality control, inspections, machine integration).

See our cases for concrete examples. Have a question about your specific industry? Feel free to get in touch.

Can you take over and further develop an existing business app?

Yes. We always start with a technical review of the existing codebase: code quality, architecture, dependencies used and technical debt. Based on that we give an honest recommendation: continue on the existing foundation, partially refactor, or start fresh.

We have taken over apps from other agencies and successfully continued their development. Bring as much documentation as possible to the intake meeting and we can quickly give a realistic picture.
