Flutter app for the May 4th remembrance: live stream, talent quiz and programme for children
About the project
The Nationale Kinderherdenking (National Children's Remembrance) takes place annually on May 4th at Madurodam in The Hague. Thousands of children from across the Netherlands participate in the remembrance ceremony alongside their parents and supervisors. To involve children digitally, we built the NKH app 'Verleden - Vandaag' (Past - Today).
The app gives children an interactive experience around the remembrance: from a countdown timer and live broadcast of the ceremony to a talent quiz where children discover which talent connects them to the themes of peace and freedom. All dynamic content (videos, links and timers) is managed via Firebase Remote Config, so the organisation can update the app without releasing a new version.
Features
Annual May 4th
The app goes live every year for the national remembrance at Madurodam in The Hague
iOS & Android
Built in Flutter: one codebase, native experience on both platforms
Firebase Remote Config
Dynamic content such as videos, links and the countdown timer are updated live without an app release
The challenge
The Nationale Kinderherdenking takes place just once a year. On that one evening, the app must perform flawlessly: the live stream must work, the timer must be accurate and the programme must be up to date. At the same time, the organisation needed to be able to update content independently, without depending on a new version in the app stores.
The approach
We chose Flutter so iOS and Android are served from a single codebase. Firebase Remote Config allows URLs, dates and content to be updated live without an app release. The talent quiz stores answers locally via Drift (SQLite) so it remains available offline too. Sentry monitors stability in production.
Result
The app gives children an interactive experience around May 4th, from the countdown timer to the live stream of the ceremony. The organisation manages all dynamic content independently via Firebase, without involving a developer.
Live stream
The full remembrance ceremony is broadcast live in the app, including the two-minute silence
Talent quiz
Children discover their talent (Explorer, Designer, Organiser or Leader) through an interactive quiz with 14 questions
Self-managed
Via Firebase Remote Config the organisation updates videos, links and timers without a new app release
