IoT app for configuring automatic blast gates in a dust extraction system
About the project
The SHUTR app is used for installing and configuring fully automatic blast gates in a dust extraction system. No specific technical knowledge is required for installation and the configuration can be performed on both iOS and Android.
In addition to the mobile app, The Next App also developed a management platform where users and firmware versions are centrally managed.
Features
iOS & Android
Cross-platform app from a single codebase
Bluetooth LE
Direct hardware connection without a network
OTA updates
Update firmware without a service engineer
The challenge
BlastGate wanted installers to be able to configure SHUTR blast gates without technical IT knowledge. The app had to work in environments without a wifi connection, while firmware also needed to be updatable remotely so service engineers would not have to come on-site every time.
The approach
We chose Flutter so iOS and Android can be served with a single codebase. The Bluetooth connection is deliberately built step by step: the app detects devices automatically and guides the user through installation. OTA updates are deployed via the management platform, after which the app automatically updates the hardware without the need for a service engineer.
Result
The Next App developed both the mobile app and the management platform entirely from scratch. Installers now configure SHUTR blast gates independently via their phone — without technical knowledge, without wifi and without a service engineer on-site.
iOS & Android
Both platforms from a single Flutter codebase
Bluetooth LE
Direct hardware connection, no wifi needed
OTA updates
Update firmware without a service engineer on-site
